5 Top tips for your dog-friendly wedding

As a Sunshine Coast celebrant who’s completely obsessed with dogs (I have two gorgeous border collies, Tilly and Luna), I’ve seen firsthand just how much joy a four-legged friend can bring to a wedding.

If you’re dreaming of a wedding that includes your furry companion, you’re in the right place! Whether you’re planning a relaxed beachside ceremony, a garden celebration or a stunning venue like Maleny Orchard (check out the photos below), including your dog in your Sunshine Coast wedding is an idea that will make your day truly unforgettable.

I love dogs so much I’d happily bring my own along as ring bearers, though let’s be honest—they’d probably herd your guests rather than carry rings! But with a little planning, your pooch can shine as part of your wedding day, adding laughter, heartwarming moments, and of course, those pawfect photo opportunities.

Here are my top tips for having a dog-friendly wedding on the Sunshine Coast and making sure your pup is the star of the show!

Dressing your pooch for success

Your fur baby deserves to look fabulous, but comfort is key. Whether it’s a bow tie, floral collar or even a full tuxedo, choose an outfit that suits your dog’s personality and won’t cause stress.

  • Test outfits ahead of time so your pup can walk, play and relax comfortably.

  • Choose soft, breathable fabrics, especially if you’re having a summer Sunshine Coast wedding.

  • Coordinate with your wedding theme or let them stand out with a bold pop of colour.

Remember, a happy pup steals the show more than any outfit ever could and those candid, joyful moments make the best memories for your wedding photos.

Ring bearer extraordinaire

Just imagine your pup proudly bounding down the aisle, rings secured, tail wagging while everyone melts. But before you commit to this heartwarming idea, ask yourself: is your dog a reliable ring bearer or a Tassie devil in disguise?

If your fur-baby is likely to get distracted mid-mission, training is essential. Start early with short practice runs, using positive reinforcement and treats. Chances are your pooch isn’t a natural-born ring bearer, so you may need to enlist a trusted handler, someone they adore and will follow without question.

You may wish to consider fake rings. Consider decoy wedding rings in the adorable collar ring box, while the real ones stay safely in your best man’s pocket. That way, if your pup decides to detour for a cuddle or make a dramatic bid for freedom, your wedding bands aren’t part of their adventure.

Finally, consider the logistics. Will they walk solo down the aisle, be escorted by a bridesmaid or will you walk them down the aisle yourself? Are they comfortable in a crowd? With the right prep, your dog can steal the show for all the right reasons, leaving you with the most aww-worthy wedding photos ever!

Picture pawfect ~ Including your fur-baby in your wedding photos

Okay, your pup is already the star of your Instagram, so why not let them shine in your wedding photos too? To make it super easy, choose a photographer who loves dogs and is comfortable working with them. A little planning goes a long way!

Schedule a photo session with your pooch, ideally earlier in the day when they’re fresh and full of energy. Bring their favorite toy or treats to grab their attention and keep them engaged. If they’re easily distracted, having a handler nearby can help keep things running smoothly.

Patience is key. Dogs have their own agenda and sometimes the best shots come from those candid, unplanned moments. Whether it’s a goofy tongue-out grin, a spontaneous zoomie or them proudly sitting by your side, these are the photos that truly capture their personality.

And if your pup isn’t up for a full photo shoot? A quick cuddle shot, a sweet nose boop or a paw on your dress (or marriage certificate) can be just as meaningful. At the end of the day, the goal is to capture their role in your love story whether it’s chaotic or cute!

Doggy daycare ~ Keeping your mate comfortable

As much as we’d love our pups to be part of every wedding moment, a full day of excitement, noise and cuddles from strangers can be a lot for them. The best way to ensure they stay happy (and not overwhelmed) is to have a solid plan in place.

Hiring a pet sitter or assigning a trusted guest as your dog’s handler is a game-changer. They’ll be in charge of walks, toilet breaks and keeping your pooch fed, watered and relaxed. This way, you can focus on getting married while knowing your furry mate is well cared for.

Set up a quiet retreat, somewhere away from the chaos with fresh water, food and a comfy bed where they can take a breather. Whether it’s a shady spot under a tree or a cozy corner, giving them a safe space to unwind will keep stress levels low.

And don’t forget that a relaxed dog is a well-behaved dog. With the right care, your pup can enjoy the day just as much as you, without any unexpected zoomies down the aisle or mid-ceremony barking fits!

Bark-worthy favours ~ A unique way to give back

Let’s think outside the square for a moment. Wedding favours don’t have to be the usual chocolates or candles. Why not make them something pawsitively unforgettable (sorry, had to say it)? If you and your partner are devoted pet lovers, use your big day as a chance to spread that love in a meaningful way.

A donation to a local animal shelter in honour of your guests is a heartfelt touch that gives back to furry friends in need. Include a note on your tables letting guests know their presence is helping rescue animals. It’s a super feel-good gesture that’ll have tails wagging.

For a fun, hands-on approach, consider pet-friendly favours. Yep, that’s right, customised dog treats, mini “doggy bags” filled with tennis balls or chew toys are perfect for guests with pets of their own. Want to go even bigger? Set up a "treat bar" with a selection of goodies for both humans and their four-legged friends to take home.

Dare to be different! Your wedding should reflect who you are as a couple and if that means celebrating with a touch of canine-inspired kindness, then go for it!

Potential Challenges ~ Keeping your cool when things get ruff

Now, let's address the Great Dane in the room.  Having your pup at your wedding may not be as smooth as a well-trained sit-and-stay. Your dog might mistake the aisle runner for a racetrack or those gorgeous wooden chairs could suddenly look like the ultimate chew toy.

The key? Flexibility and a solid backup plan. Check with your venue early and if they have restrictions, think outside the box. If your dog is more of a homebody or a little too excitable, there are still plenty of ways to include them in your big day.

Feature them in your engagement photos, give them a sweet mention in your ceremony script or get creative with a life-size cardboard cutout at your reception or include their adorable face on wedding favours. Instant crowd-pleaser and guaranteed stress-free!

If you’re looking to add a truly pawsonal touch to your wedding, why not name a signature cocktail after your beloved fur-baby? A “Pomeranian Punch” or “Great Dane Daiquiri” could be a fun way to include your dog in the celebration, while keeping the vibe light-hearted and cheeky. After all, a wedding is about celebrating love in all its forms and that includes the unconditional love of your furry friend.

At the end of the day, having your dog at your Sunshine Coast wedding is all about celebrating your bond without adding unnecessary stress because a relaxed couple makes for the best wedding day ever!

Whether your dog is strutting down the aisle or supporting you from home, their presence adds an extra sprinkle of joy to your big day. It’s the little details, like a signature cocktail, that create lasting memories and when they involve your best furry friend, it’s guaranteed to be a celebration everyone will remember!
