Wedding Budget 101: How to plan your dream wedding without breaking the bank
Smart wedding budget tips to plan your big day
Let’s talk wedding budgets, not the sparkliest part of wedding planning, but one of the most powerful when it comes to creating a day you’ll love long after the confetti’s been swept away. With rising costs and big Pinterest dreams, it’s more important than ever to plan your wedding budget with intention, clarity and a little insider know-how.
So pop the kettle on, take a breath and let’s walk through some practical, realistic and surprisingly uplifting ways to plan a meaningful and memorable wedding that celebrates your love without leaving your bank account in recovery mode.
Prioritise like a pro
Before you start throwing money around like confetti, sit down with your better half and decide what really matters to you both. Is it a top-notch photographer to capture every moment? A menu that would make Matt Preston weep with joy? Or maybe you're all about that thumping dance floor with a top-notch DJ? Whatever it is, allocate more of your budget to your non-negotiables and be prepared to make sacrifices elsewhere. Remember, your wedding is about celebrating your love, not emptying your savings account!
Timing is everything: The off-peak advantage
Here's a little insider tip from a celebrant with years in the industry, consider an off-peak wedding. While we don’t really have an off-peak season here on the Sunshine Coast, around Australia, getting hitched in the cooler months or on a weekday can save you a bundle. Plus, you'll have a better chance of booking your dream venue and suppliers because they’re more likely available between Monday and Thursday. Just imagine exchanging vows as the autumn leaves fall or celebrating your love on a crisp winter's day, romantic and budget-friendly! Also consider florals and food in season which makes planning easier on many levels.
DIY is key: Handmade with love
Channel your inner crafty self and see what you can create with your clever hands and imagination. From invitations to decorations, there's plenty of scope to add a personal touch while saving some coin. But be realistic! If your DIY skills are more disaster than masterpiece, it might be worth leaving it to the pros. Also think of the time it takes to make everything, to hire/set up/pack down furniture on your own and other logistics that could steal your precious zen time before your big day.
The great guest list debate: Quality over quantity
You may want to invite everyone from your second cousin twice removed to your barista to your wedding. But trust me, keeping your guest list tight is one of the easiest ways to keep your budget in check. Fewer guests mean lower costs across the board, from catering to the bar tab. Plus, a smaller wedding often feels more intimate and special. Think of it as your own exclusive party with your absolute favourite people!
Something borrowed, something new (to you)
Who says everything at your wedding needs to be brand spanking new? Consider hiring suits instead of buying, check out second-hand wedding dresses (often worn once and in perfect nick!), op shops for décor or see what you can borrow from recently married friends (I borrowed my best friends tiara coz they were all the rage in the mid 2000’s). You could even rent decorations instead of buying them outright. It's good for your wallet and the environment. Talk about a win-win!
Bonus tip: The buffer zone
Here's a little nugget of wisdom from years in the wedding game. Always, always add a buffer to your budget. Around 10-15% should do the trick. This little safety net will catch any unexpected costs (and trust me, there's always something) without sending you into a panic. Here are 3 great tips to recover if you go over budget.
Remember, at the end of the day, your wedding is about celebrating your love and commitment to each other. Whether you're popping champagne or sipping sparkling wine, wearing Gucci or Op Shop chic, what matters most is that you're surrounded by love and starting your new life together without a heavy debt in your wake.
